Here's a few photos from our last trip to Thy. We had 2 days with something close to epic windsurf. Two days with good wind, big waves and sun :)

This is from Sunday afternoon just before we got in the water, at this time the waves was still quit small. During our session the waves got bigger and the wind got better and we surfed until dawn... This was the best session of the season until now!

Monday the wind stated blowing again in the afternoon and within a hour it changed from nearly wind still to gale force. We sailed 4.2 which was our smallest, even though we could easily have sailed 3.7. Here is a few shots from Monday.

It was quite hard to hold the camera still in 16 m/s thus I had to discard most of the photos as they was unsharp.

Surf or Ski

Until now the winter in Scandinavia has been the toughest I'w ever experienced. There has been frost and snow from mid December and there is no real sign of milder weather. Normally we get a few days with snow during a whole winter.

Friday the 12 of February a new snowstorm hit Bornholm and the south-eastern part of Skåne. On Bornholm people was evacuated and most roads was closed until Saturday. In Skåne things didn't look that bad Saturday morning, maybe because the Swedes are better handling these snow-conditions.

With the snowstorm a decent size NE swell was forecasted for southeast Skåne. This was about to become my coldest surf session ever. Air temperature was -2 degree Celsius and water temperature was -1 degree Celsius.

The ice forecast was right, the coastline was not frozen, it was only slush-ice with ice cubes.

If it hadn't been for the slush-ice I think the waves would have been quite good.

What to do when you can't surf because of slush-ice? Go skiing, luckily we brought ski and snowboards :)

Hope u all enjoy this unusual winter. Europe has been locked inside a freezer. The great oceans gets one big swell after another. And the southern hemisphere gets grilled.

A rare righthander

Until now the danish autumn has been rather strange. The prevailing wind direction has been from a easterly direction and it has been unusually cold. Normally the wind is westerly to north westerly during autumn and winter and more diverse with the incoming lows giving more surf.

The good thing about all this easterly wind is that the Baltic sea spots has been firing more frequent than normally.

This early Thursday morning me and a few buddies skipped work in the morning to catch a nice east swell.

Around Denmark it's often hard to come by a good solid righthander like this one. Most spots are lefthanders and as being a goofy footer it not that big an issue :) But still it nice to do some backside surfing at times.

The Baltic sea has awakened after a long period without any noticeable waves. A low pressure has stabilized to the east of the Baltic sea producing strong N-NE winds over large parts of the Baltic sea. During Wednesday night a offshore bouye measured 11.22m waves in the south of the Baltic sea. That's big!!! and for a small sea as the Baltic sea, it's HUGE.

Thursday morning there where some big sets rolling in at one of our favorite spots for this wind and swell direction. It was some of the biggest I have seen on this spot and it was on the edge of maxing out.

The water level and a strong rip made it challenging surf. Due to the high water level the waves was kind of flat and lacked some hollowness. For the longboarders it was paradise. Big flat waves that could be surfed all the way in from the outside reef.

During the day the size was dropping a bit and both the water level and current was falling a bit.

Hadn't it been for the high water level and strong current it would have been an epic day. There was a good size ground swell with a long period and the wind was offshore. Even though it was well worth a day off work and we ended up surfing for a good 5 hours.

I heard from a friend that conditions became better later on the evening just before dark. As usual "just before dark", such a shame, we really need to setup some light out there.

We never saw any 11.22m waves :(

Weekend with Danny

As hungry dogs we always end up with the leftovers. This time it was the once tropical storm Danny that gave us a windy weekend. At Friday the 4. of August it started with a nasty hauling southerly wind with gusts of up to 25-28 m/s.

Vilshärrad was going nuts, people was windsurfing overpowered with 3.5 while the wind was extremely gusty. None of us had that small sails and the wind was more westerly than expected making it side onshore.

We went searching for alternatives

And ended up in a mixed session further south, I was windsurfing while the others were paddlesurfing. It was a new discovery, a pointbreak that delivered clean shoulder to headhigh waves. The wind was 90 degree offshore thus a bit difficult to windsurf but the spot seems to have a lot of potential. Didn't get any photos as is was getting dark :( Gotta be next time.

Saturday also delivered strong westerly winds, I didn't get out but heard that people was windsurfing havstokken with 4.2. Should have been good.

Sunday the wind had turned into W-NW and the scene was set for a decent paddle session.

My buddies abandoned me to checkout a new spot which didn't work (tsktsk). I ended up surfing sealpoint all by myself in headhigh conditions.

I didn't try to count the number of waves that I got, but it was properly more than I can count to :)

Hornbæk Classic

It has been ages since my last windsurf post. That will changed now, this summer I have been windsurfing on most of the good days. And now that we have moved up near Helsingør it only a 5-10 min. drive to the north shore.

Tuesday the 18. of August was a classic Hornbæk day. The wind was 11-13 m/s from W-NW, there was headhigh waves and the sun was shining. Hard to ask for more.

After 2 hours on the water my harness broke and sure enough it happened as I was way out in the back. When I got in my arms was nearly 10 cm longer and aching. So if the pics seems a bit shaken that's why.

Summer swell

It has been three weeks without waves at the northsea due to a prevailing high pressure above Denmark. Now things are back to normal with continuous incoming front systems from the west and we got a reminder of how good the northsea can get.

Early Mornings

It has been a long time since my last posting which isn’t because of bad surf but more a result of me being busy being a daddy. There have been some fun surf during the winter but most sessions have been either short and intense or in poor lighting due to the short winter days. Now things are lighting up and the days are becoming longer and there is light early in the morning again, making it possible to go surf before work :)

Last Friday there was a small NE swell in the Baltic Sea, it wasn’t much but enough to get up at 04 am and get 2 hours of surf.

When we arrived the conditions was doubtful but a few reasonable sets sneaked through. We went in and within a quarter the wind dropped totally and the current shifted cleaning up the small swell. Most sets were in the waist to shoulder high range and an occasional headhigh set came in.

It was a session that without doubt was worth getting up in the middle of the night for.

At Monday it happed again, this time just in Kattegat. During Sunday night the wind had been hauling from NV and the forecast was predicting a fast drop during Monday morning as a low pressure was passing close by.

Conditions were Ok but not as good as we had expected. The forecast had predicted 2-3 m waves but it was more like headhigh and a few sets over headhigh due to the wind had dropped earlier than expected.

During our session the wind dropped and turned offshore which improved conditions considerably. Sadly the waves faded quickly and lasted for only 2 hours, though it was enough to get stoked and without doubt the best way to spent Moday morning.

Glassy Northsea

The winter has kicked in and the classic NW swell has announced it's arrival. During the winter period it is common with very light or no wind at all along the danish west coast while an arctic low simultaneously is placed over northwest Norway. Which is exactly the conditions that is needed to bring on a big smile during the dark short winter days.

Roelf Hans and me quickly arranged a trip to the west coast to see if 0.5-1 m swell with a 12-14 second period and dead offshore wind could produce anything worthy.

This is from a place south of Thyborøn with several nice sandbars.

And these mini barrels belongs to Bunkers.

The short winter days in combination with a need for all you can get feeling didn't leave much time for photography, sorry :)

Another great day in Sweden with headhigh waves, sideshore wind and a bit of current. Compared to recent sessions this one wasn't much, even though this was a worthwhile session with heaps of good rides.

This late summer and early autumn has been amazing. We have had some epic days both in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. If you asked me one year ago I would never believe that you could find conditions like these in Scandinavia. I would probably say "nah you are kidding me, to surf you'll have to go to Hawaii". But here we are, in little sheltered Denmark and we have had more than a handful of good sessions in one month. That is incredible, though you could get even more good days if it wasn't for the work and family responsibility. Most of the time it is only weekend surf as the weekdays are spent working. So who said that you cannot surf in Denmark?

Ike leftovers

It's not only the Caribbean shores that harvest the waves of tropical hurricanes. After Ike has been destroying large parts of the US it moved on toward Greenland and sent long period swell down toward the Nordic Sea.

This is the wave and swell height in the morning of the 19. of September.

Which by itself does not look as much, but topped with the long period of 10-12 seconds it got very interesting.

After a few quick calls a short and intense trip was arranged. We left Copenhagen Thursday night and was back in Copenhagen Friday night. 6 hours of drive, 3 hours sleep, 8 hours surf and 6 hours drive back to Copenhagen. And it was all worth it!!!

We started with a sunrise session at bunkers where we got overhead-high waves.

Around noon the wind shifted and picked up a bit thus Bunkers vent messy. We had a quick lunch and continued to Nr. Vorupør where the wind still was offshore. The waves wasn't as high as at Bunkers but way cleaner and total glassy. We had an amazing afternoon session with head-high waves and no crowd to speak of.

Full Moon Surfing

Once again a high-pressure has stabilized over south west Sweden and the Baltic sea has been awoken.

To appreciate the real beauty of this lineup shot it must be viewed large. Look for the two small black dots.

We spent yet another weekend with some decent surf. Ranging from shoulder to headhigh waves and a shifting wind between offshore and side-shore.

After 6 hours of good surf we made a fire and had a nice barbie just in front of the lineup while watching the waves in the moon light.

Our camp fire is in the center of the lower part, super nice spot.

Sunday delivered a little bigger waves early in the morning thought the wind picked up after a few hours and turned side-shore. The waves quickly became messy and less hollow. It didn't matter too much as we all got our share and couldn't stop smiling while leaving the messy conditions for those that could not get out of bed for the early morning session.

Friday night at 04 am the alarm clock buzzed and it was time to get up. A 5 hours drive was awaiting and the forecast was looking quite good. No problem getting up knowing that we soon would get some waves. When we arrived it was nearly flat and a long and painful waiting period started. First in the late afternoon the first surfable waves arrived and we hit the water even though it was a messy onshore wind swell. A little is always better than nothing!

Baltic Gold

Well to use some of the regular expressions for days like this one. It was epic, the spot was firing, it was going off.

Think the photo speaks for it self!!!

I have never seen conditions like this near Denmark. It was just like in Indo.

We went over there Saturday night and had a nice session before dark. Nothing big but clean and fun. Sunday morning the conditions was quite similar. The waves was bigger and the wind shifted between dead to direct offshore. In early morning the waves was still only shoulder to head-high thus rising throughout the morning. At noon the spot was firing with super clean overhead-high waves. The offshore wind and relatively low water level produced some amazing barrels. And once again the crowd counted 6 surfers at most, sweet!

Summer at the Baltic Sea

Normally a sunny summer in Denmark is equal to a flat spell and light eastern wind. At the moment we have these condition, thought by turning the eyes toward the Baltic sea you might be rewarded.

Well conditions can be summarized to NE wind and E wind swell in the range of 1.5 - 2 m. Air temperature was 25 C and water 18 C, and not to forget, it was sunny with a clear blue sky. Crowd ? well when things was really boiling I counted 5 surfers ;)

Sunny Whit Monday

For ages and ages a high pressure has been stabilizing over Denmark resulting in no waves at all, though it has been sunny. Then Sunday night a cold front finally found its way through and Monday morning we woke up to a hauling NE vind and a clear blue sky.

Easter on Azores

The Azores is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 km from Lisbon and about 3,900 km from the east coast of North America. The Azores consist of nine large islands and 8 small where Sao Miguel is the main island with the capital Ponta Delgada.

Put in surfing terms the Azores is situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in deep water which pretty much ensures swell all year around. Having the golf current passing just by, even in the winter the water temperature never goes below 17-18 degrees C. All put together this is the Atlantic Hawaii

From all the guidebooks and surfspot internet sites, spring is not season for swell, even though we had swell every day ranging from 1.5 to 3 m from different directions. The swell season is August to October where the swell should be southerly. Besides the swell we had nice weather most days with 20 C. and lite cloud cover.

South coast
Most accommodation on Sao Miguel is on the south coast near Ponta Delgada making the surf spots around here the most crowded, even though the crowd here is really small. Most spots on the south coast is beach breaks with a large swell window. The most exposed spots picks up swell from V to NE making it very consistent.

Populo is probably the best beach break on the south coast. The wave is quite powerful and there are a couple of nice peaks on the stretch.

Populo is just outside of Ponta Delgada with hotels all around, even though there is no real crowd . All the beginners are on the inside in the whitewater and the remaining 10 people share the outside peaks, Sweet...

Aqua de Alto aka "Gammelt vand" or "Højt vand" is a beach break like Populo 20-30 min. drive from Ponta Delgada but with no people around. It tends to be a like a foot bigger than on Populo but the wave closes a bit faster, even though it's a fun wave with plenty of power.

This is from our first day at Sao Miguel with NE swell and a hauling N wind (direct offshore). There was shoulder to headhigh waves and only two dudes in the lineup, us.

Later on the wind took off and the swell switched to S-SW with a ground swell of 2 m and a wave period on 12-14 s. This was just epic compared to danish conditions. The locals was quit relaxed about it and kept saying "this is only a small day".

After a good day of surf there is nothing better than watching the sunset with a beer or two.

North Shore
On the North shore the waves are more powerful and tends to be bigger than on the south coast. There are two beach breeaks on the north shore, Monte Verde and Santa Barbara. We only tried Monte Verde both with NE and NV swell. The best condition is NV swell and S-SW wind which we had one day, even though it was a bit messy and the current was freaky.

It's hard to see on this photo but the waves are overhead high.

Mosterios
The most western point of the island hold a little village Mosterios which beside surfing offers little. There are a few spots around the village, all reef breaks.

This is Praia dos Mosterios, a righthander lava reef break. We never surfed it but it sure looked nice with the waves wrapping around the point and peeling off the reef for 100 to 150 m.

This is a local dude that knew this wave pretty well judging from the takeoff zone which was filled with lava rocks popping out of the face.

Whale watching
Besides surfing the Azores are known for it's magnificent marine life. The diving should be world class but we never got time to explore that. There is a quit good change to see different kinds of whales. We chartered a boat and went whale watching one day and saw both fin whales and Cachalot whales.

We started with a sunset session Friday night after work. When we got there the waves was inconsistent and only knee high. Things was looking shaky an soon there would be dark. Even though we decided to give it a chance and luckily the waves came within half a hour repaying us with shoulder high sets.

The forecast for Saturday was saying 2-3 m swell on the North shore of Sealand. 8.00 am we were back and Plantagen was pumping...

Excitement... Waves and offshore wind.

Cold perfection... water temperature is 3 degrees Celsius.

BigSunday called off

The forecast was looking really good, 12 m/s from W starting Saturday night and continuing all night and all Sunday with ground swell of 1.5-2 m from NW peaking at noon. Well thats not exactly what we got... everything was dead flat until noon when knee high waves was showing up. At 15 pm we went out and waves was waist high and the biggest set delivered shoulder high.

Swell, Sunshine, and no crowd what more can you ask for. This was my first time surfing this spot and I'm totally stoked. We got long clean rides of up to 150 m.

At sunrise the wind was hauling but within a hour it dropped rapidly and we was left with long clean sets of 1.5-2 m.

After a few hours the wind had dropped totally and the waves got nice and glassy... nam-nam

Not to speak of the peelers offering some amazing rides.

Mysterious Sweden

For a long time I have heard stories and seen pictures of glassy peeling waves in Sweden and at last I got to surf it myself.

In respect to the local surfers and others who frequent surf the spot I will not reveal its position as it's already tending to be crowded.

The conditions where not really good when we arrived. From others we heard that there had been some good waves in the morning. When we got there the waves was 1-1.5 m with small infrequent sets. All pictures are taken from this time.

After a cop of coffee we went into the water and got some nice ones and luckily the swell got bigger and the biggest was about 2+ m.

Pressure Taken

On December the 29. the forecast was saying 13-15 m/s from S-SV with both an air and water temperature of 4-5 degree Celsius. I think this is my record of late winter surfing as I never really has been into this viking thing. In Denmark the best windsurfing and surfing conditions are in the winter and armed with a 6 mm hooded wetsuite I have decided to continue surfing and windsurfing all year. And to be honest it's only cold when changing into and out off the wetsuite but that is also freaking cold...

This Saturday afternoon in Lynæs was just what I needed. We where only a couple of windsurfers but I think we all got what we came for. To have the pressure taken after some time without any wind. Speaking for myself, I haven't been on the water since Fuerteventura and that is over an month ago. Now I'm just looking forward to some serious wavesailing.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands, situated in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of Africa. It is the second largest and I think the least touristed, a lovely place with heaps of good surf.

November the 19. my girlfriend, surfboard, and I went to Fuerteventura for one week. It was one of these package solutions where everything was included. Flight, bus to the hotel, and guides to assist if there was any problems. All week we had ok conditions, often there was either cloudy in the morning or in the afternoon and the air temperature was between 23 - 26 degree Celsius. Well first thing first, we rented a car and got the "Wannasurf spotguide" lined up with a map of the island.

Playa de Esquinzo
First surf spot was Playa de Esquinzo, a beach break on the west coast, a little south of El Cotillo. From what I could read in Wannasurf this sounded like the perfect warm up spot.

When we got there a southern wind was hauling and the waves was massive, a least compared to what I'm use to. A consistent swell on 2-3 m was rolling in and it often closed out quite fast. Not just the conditions I had hoped for, for a warm up. Anyway Sophie was giving me the "you 're are kidding me" look so I knew time was running short. I ended up having a nice session riding some of the biggest waves ever, even without any serious wipeouts.

Next day the wind had dropped totally and the sun was shining from a deep blue sky. After the successful session the day before I was hungry after more bigwave surfing ;) So we went back to Esquinzo and this time Sophie gave me the thumb up. We nearly had the beach all to ourself. It was just beautiful.

The waves was same size as the day before, if not a little bigger and more glassy.

I think this is the best suf pic from the trip, taken by Sophie, it captures both the epic conditions and the expression of deep deep concentration. Lovely... thanks Sophie.

And naturally I also took some nasty wipeouts. Sophie caught this one, which was a gentle one.

Rocky Point
After the first two days at Esquinzo the swell was getting bigger and the wind was shifting into NV and increasing. Instead of going back to Esquinzo I went out to Rocky Point, a spot just outside of Correlejo. A nice and really forgiving wave breaking on a lava reef. I spent two days out there and got a lot of good long rides. No action pics as Sophie was enjoying the sunbeds at the hotel pool and I was too busy surfing.

The next few days the NW wind was picking up and even Rocky Point was getting blown out and the east coast was some decent swell.

At high tide Punta Elena offered some small fun waves. Usually I spent the afternoon out there. It was sometimes really shallow, like 30-50 cm but the waves was not at all powerful.

All put together Fuerteventura is a really nice place with heaps of good surf. Definitely a place I will recommend.

A basic, non frilled, day with 1-2 m waves. We had hoped for an epic day as the forecast was really good. The day before we had the first real winter storm it produced 20-24 m/s from NW with 3-4 m waves. Missed that day :(

The waves was a little messy and the current was exceptionally strong

After 3 hours in the pool we were done, no more energy and the shoulders was beaten. After all a good day on the water, as always ;)

An October weekend in Klitmøller

When we left Copenhagen Friday the forecast was looking quit bad, a high pressure was about to stabilize over Denmark. Thus no wind and and no swell. Thankfully luck was on our side, when we woke up Saturday morning a small low pressure was coming in and a steady breeze (8-10 m/s) was already blowing from V-SV and it seemed to pick up...

At 12 noon we went out at Nr. Vorupør. The waves was a little messy but it seemed durable. Wave height was 1-1.5 m and growing.

After 2 hours the waves got too big and was closing out too fare out. But we were still hungry and went back to Klitmøller hoping for better conditions in the bay.

The forecast for Sunday was now looking really good, there was suppose to come swell in and the wind should drop and turn into light breeze from East which means offshore.

Praise the gods and goddesses, we got up with the sun to a unforgettable sight. Perfectly clean glassy waves was steadily rolling in at Bunkers. Wave hight was 0.5-1.5 m.

All together we got a lot more surf than expected and Sunday was just perfect, top class conditions for Bunkers.
